Exactly how we came up with the concept of a dating service for robots is lost in the proverbial mists of time. It would be nice to say that we had some elaborate concept cooked up, but most likely we were just blowing off mental steam at the coffee shop between classes, stumbled upon that combination of words and liked it. About this design
I’m sensing a cross-over between our Irish and grad school themes, but then my brain’s never been the same since higher education. Is that what artist Wes Koster had in mind here? Well, you could ask, but I suspect he would just point at the image and tell you it speaks for him.

io9: “These life support machines work to keep each other alive”

These life support machines work to keep each other alive (concept art)
“What do life support devices do when there are no humans left to support? These plucky little machines have found a solution: when no human is available, they work to keep each other alive instead.”

Sad consumer robots
Posted by brian on April 22, 2009
Consumer robots struggle to gain acceptance, affection.
Robot makers have been hit by a double whammy: A recession-inflicted downturn in consumer spending and a lack of mainstream acceptance of robots by American consumers. Those factors combined put the industry in a zone of pain.

At Carnegie Mellon, robots learning social skills
Posted by brian on April 16, 2009
There’s another unusual thing about Tank: He’s a robot. He looks like a Shop-Vac with a flat-panel monitor for a head. But his face is human and expressive, and his eyes move from side to side.

About this design
When one has studied a language for a long, looong time, it’s natural that word-play skills in that language start to develop. Or so it seems — we’re convinced that your brain just gets wacky. And, when that language is Irish, we’ve noticed that the wackiness tends to run towards the puckish….
So, this. Pro-vegetarianism rhetoric? Probably not. A visual ode to the awkwardness of reaching for one word and grabbing exactly the wrong one? Maybe…all we know is the rumor that artist Wes Koster scanned a REAL PIG to get just the right color for the background. Or was it a pack of hot dogs? We don’t know — he won’t let us into his home. Is it because we use phrases like “visual ode”?…

About this design
Trenchant commentary on modern-day perceptions of traditional Irish dietary habits? Heck if we know. We thought we heard artist Wes Koster say something to the effect of “I just like drawing cabbages,” but that’s not terribly marketing-minded so surely we must have misunderstood!

About this design
I now have this eerie feeling that I’ve mentioned too often my poverty-stricken attempts at nutrition during my long stretch of undergrad study…though that would mean artist Wes Koster was actually paying attention! That can’t be it.
